In days gone by, the one way that kids making money would occur was at the business end of a lawnmower. Many a youngster would offer friends, family members and neighbors a beautifully mowed lawn in exchange for pocket money. Some elevated this after school activity to a little enterprise and actually became entrepreneurs in their own rights. Yet in a day and age when many homeowners employ gardeners who charge precious little for mowing, edging and even occasional pruning of hedges and shrubs, kids making money with the help of lawn and garden equipment are few and far between.

Instead, in the computer age the idea of kids making money has gone online. Internet access for kids is a hotly debated topic and with the ever present threat of Internet predators many parents have misgivings about their kids’ online activities. At the same time, the sheer number of juveniles belonging to social networking sites proves that there is no way of keeping kids off line. To this end, those youthful entrepreneurs who would realize a profit with the help of a computer are becoming more plentiful.

Take for example the well known entrepreneur a few years ago who – while in high school – created a portal site for freebies and company sponsored free offers as well as product samples. With the help of affiliate links he was able to make a good profit and even garnered some attention on news shows featuring kids making money online. As he entered college, he added a travel log to the site and soon a loyal following was clicking on the links for freebies while at the same time enjoying the latest exploits that took him across Europe.

Many other kids making money online rely on affiliate marketing, but some have distinct tie-ins with their hobbies, in particular video games. You may find walkthroughs posted that take those not able to figure out which way to make it through a particularly difficult passage in a video game through the entire process. At the same time, small fees associated with this service help defray the cost not only for the website setup and hosting, but also put some pocket money in the hands of those who are seeking to profit from their hobbies.

Granted, this is a far cry from the tried and true business methods of yesterday, but it has proven to be the natural progression of a society that is getting away from manual labor and instead focuses more and more on the computerized way of doing things. In many cases the profit margin is small and some youths find that rather than the fiscal rewards there are the rewards of recognition and even the development of a loyal following which goes a long way to make up for the lack of cold hard cash. Other youngsters have put their artwork online and have had some moderate success with those painting and pictures. To them, validation is perhaps the most important aspect of the business experience.
