There is one commodity that nearly everyone runs out of and that is time. For some reason when someone opens a home business they believe that suddenly their days will have more hours in them than they did when they worked for someone else. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for them to realize that there are not only the same number of hours in a day, but those hours may seem like they have fewer minutes in them.

Tie management is not a skill that can be taught, is a behavior that has to be learned. Many tools are available to help people manage their time, but they have to take the initial step in getting started before they can make better use of the time they have. Time management will also help them balance their work and home life, commonly referred to as creating a work-life balance and to start they need to realize how closely they are related.

Too many people have a calendar for their work and a separate calendar for their family life. With the two so closely connected, they only need one calendar. Instead of having to consult with two pieces of paper before determining if you can make a meeting or not, pulling out one calendar can make the decision an easy one. It does not matter what brand is considered the best or the most expensive. The only thing that matters is that you get a planner with a calendar and use it regularly.

Before you fill out the calendar you will need to make sure you have your priorities in order. Every day, new priorities will pop up based on emergencies and customer demands. One thing to consider is that when a customer emergency comes up and is direct conflict with a scheduled family event, you will have to decide on where your priorities are on that specific date and time. If you have a helper who can take care of the customer issue, without conflicting with their family calendar, that’s a plus. If not, the customer may have to wait until you get done.

Setting daily priorities should always begin with a block of time being set aside as contingency time. That is time set aside to handle unexpected issues and can be as little as 15 minutes. If nothing happens, you have an extra 15 minutes unclaimed at the end of the day. If it does, you have time to handle it without throwing the schedule complete out of whack.

Possibly the best thing you can do to better manage your time is to establish a minimum of 10 minutes every morning to review what you have to do that day and reprioritize any items that did not get done from yesterday’s list. This daily planning session can be the first thing you do when you get to your office or done with your first cup of coffee. The bottom line is you need to get into the habit to review your daily plans and then stick to the plan throughout the day.

Making A Home Office Without A Home Office

Many people like to work from home, and if you are interested in doing so you know that it is going to be very important that you find a place where you can spend your work day without feeling like you are still at home. There are lots of ways that you can have a home office. Some people are lucky enough to have an extra room that they can use for their home office, but most people do not have that luxury. If you don’t have a home office, you might be able to still feel like you do, and still get as much done as you would be able to get done in a home office.

However, depending on what you want to be doing in your home office, you might not need that much room. If you are able to, you can even set up a desk or a tray table in a corner of the rec room or the living room, and work from there. When they are done with work they can turn off the computer and close the desk, which means that the work day is over and they can stop worrying about it. This is something that many people use if they are doing their work in a room that is used for anything else. Remember that this is all something that you can do without making a big deal of it, or without worrying that you will be unable to do your work.

There are other things that you can do. Consider buying a room divider, which will turn any room in your house into two rooms. You can use one for your office and you will not have to worry about not having the space. You can also be able to do this so you don’t have to worry about your home office being as neat as any other room in your house.

The only requirement is that you some how find a way to separate your home office from the other rooms in your house. This is something that you have to be sure that you do so that you can work successfully.

Whenever a person is looking at starting their own business, money and time are two areas that can make the decision a tough choice. On the one hand, leaving the current job is more than a leap of faith in their own abilities and the viability of their business plan it is also a high gamble on the finances of their family. Unless there is already a waiting list for their product or services, it can take some time before the income from the new venture is enough to meet all of their business and personal expenses.

Most people who start a new business pour the majority of their money back into the business and usually only pay themselves as much as they need to get by. This can be an availability niche to help get a new business off the ground.

Starting the business on a part-time schedule is going to be a two-edged sword in that the owner will be putting in extra hours working in the odd hours. However, if they dedicate the income to the business and continue meeting personal expenses from their day job, they will be able to eventually make the switch to working in their business on a full-time basis, allowing it to grow to meet their financial needs.

Make Decisions Based On Facts Not Emotions

Running a business can be fun, but many successful business owners have come to a tough realization that in a business environment, they have no friends. They have employees that are dedicated to the company and they may have customers that are loyal, but the bottom line of the business is the prime concern they have to watch. One of the biggest obstacles they face in the say to day business operations is their own emotions and they need to leave them at home when they head for the office.

For instance, a business owner is approached by their financial expert who tells them they have to cut half of their workers loose in order to meet expenses. This can be an emotional time for the owner as on one hand, many of the workers are loyal to the company and are very productive. On the other hand the company needs to be able to run leaner to make ends meet.

Simply based on the emotions of keeping the business operating, the solution may seem obvious in cutting half the workforce. However, before making that call the owner needs to look at all the facts and not just the financial ones. Questions need to be asked such as how long will this lack of income last? If we layoff employees, how much will be spent on unemployment compensation? What are other options in cutting expenses, such as is the finance guy really necessary?

If half of the workforce is let go, what will be the effect on productivity and customer service and will the remaining employees be able to handle everything without the additional help? After thoroughly understanding all of the available options and the effects of instituting any suggested changes it is found that half will need to be let go, then that is the right decision for everyone.

Decisions have to be based on how the outcome will affect everyone involved and not just the ones being laid off. Sure, it is a tough decision but one of the responsibilities of a business owner is being able to make the tough calls, knowing it is the right one for the business as well as for the remaining workers. Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule about which employees will need to go away. Seniority may be the deciding factor, but some businesses use productivity instead.

For example, a new hire may produce as much or more as an employee with several years experience, the new hire may be a better fit. Owners should never look at payroll as a deciding factor as getting rid of some of the higher paid, long-term employees is also getting rid of loyalty as well as experience.

The decision should be based on who can offer the most to the business, a decision based on facts rather than the emotions of who needs the job more. From a cold fact point of view, if the worker needs the job that bad, they have probably been a consistently hard, productive asset to the company.

Make Financial Goals Part Of Your Business Vision

The first step is to determine what you and your family needs to meet your obligations including rent or mortgage payments, utilities, food and typical household expenses. Once you have that in writing, you can begin estimating business costs. Even though you are setting up an office in the home and plan to take a business use of the home tax deduction, you should still consider the portion of the rent and utilities that will be represented by your tax deduction as a business expense. Conservative estimates can be a good starting point, but you will also need a contingency fund in the event of an unforeseen repair or a project that gets out of hand and costs more than anticipated. Once you have gong through the home and business expenses you will have a good idea of how much money you have to bring in through the business to maintain your family lifestyle and meet your business expenses.

Now it is time to seriously think about the projected income of the business. Remember it is not only the business expenses you need to cover. For example, if you anticipate personal expenses of $1,500 a month and business expenses of $500 a month, anything less that $2,000 a month is going to leave you with some unpaid bills. If the business you are planning to open is not capable of delivering that amount of income, you may have to rethink your prospects.

Even if the potential is there for a minimum of $2,000 per month, you will need to be realistic about how long the business will need to be operating before that level is achieved and determine if you have enough money to survive until it does grow to the necessary level.
