Managing Time Means Managing Your Life

30 April 2009

There is one commodity that nearly everyone runs out of and that is time. For some reason when someone opens a home business they believe that suddenly their days will have more hours in them than they did when they worked for someone else. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for them to realize that there are not only the same number of hours in a day, but those hours may seem like they have fewer minutes in them.

Tie management is not a skill that can be taught, is a behavior that has to be learned. Many tools are available to help people manage their time, but they have to take the initial step in getting started before they can make better use of the time they have. Time management will also help them balance their work and home life, commonly referred to as creating a work-life balance and to start they need to realize how closely they are related.

Too many people have a calendar for their work and a separate calendar for their family life. With the two so closely connected, they only need one calendar. Instead of having to consult with two pieces of paper before determining if you can make a meeting or not, pulling out one calendar can make the decision an easy one. It does not matter what brand is considered the best or the most expensive. The only thing that matters is that you get a planner with a calendar and use it regularly.

Before you fill out the calendar you will need to make sure you have your priorities in order. Every day, new priorities will pop up based on emergencies and customer demands. One thing to consider is that when a customer emergency comes up and is direct conflict with a scheduled family event, you will have to decide on where your priorities are on that specific date and time. If you have a helper who can take care of the customer issue, without conflicting with their family calendar, that’s a plus. If not, the customer may have to wait until you get done.

Setting daily priorities should always begin with a block of time being set aside as contingency time. That is time set aside to handle unexpected issues and can be as little as 15 minutes. If nothing happens, you have an extra 15 minutes unclaimed at the end of the day. If it does, you have time to handle it without throwing the schedule complete out of whack.

Possibly the best thing you can do to better manage your time is to establish a minimum of 10 minutes every morning to review what you have to do that day and reprioritize any items that did not get done from yesterday’s list. This daily planning session can be the first thing you do when you get to your office or done with your first cup of coffee. The bottom line is you need to get into the habit to review your daily plans and then stick to the plan throughout the day.

Turning Investment Into Residual Income

29 April 2009

There are many ways for a person to build residual income. Passive residual income is the type of residual income earned from investments. These investments keep turning a profit and allow a person to do very little work and invest very little time to turn a profit. Making a passive income is easy once a person understands the great ways to turn an investment into residual income.

Passive income involves a one time investment of time or money to earn an ongoing residual income. Some people like to say it is impossible to get money for doing nothing, but that is not completely true. It is very possible for a person to invest in something one time and continue to earn from it. Think about television. Actors spend an initial amount of time preparing for and recording a show, but continue to get paid for it every time it is on television. That is just one example. There are many more out there. A website is a great example of how a person can turn a one time investment into residual income.

A website can be set up to take orders, show products and even answer questions for customers. Optimizing a business website is a way to build passive residual income. Optimizing a website involves adding content and formatting it so that it becomes ranked high by search engines. This can take a little time to do, but one it is done a website will start to get a lot of traffic. By simply optimizing a website a business owner is driving traffic and sales to their website. They do not have to do anything more because the website will handle the rest.

Using auto responders is another way. An auto responder is an automated email. When a customer sends an email to the auto responder address they get an immediate answer. Setting up an auto responder is easy and it can help in many ways. If a customer has a question and they send in an email they will be happier with a quick response of an auto responder and less likely to go elsewhere for the product. Auto responders can also be used to send out information, like special offers or sales which can lead to more business as well.

A small investment of time can turn into major residual income. That is what residual income is all about. The ability to spend a few minutes tweaking a website, for example, could turn a struggling business into a thriving one. That is the beauty of residual income. So, in the end it is not really getting money for doing nothing. A person is investing something into the business and they are just earning a lot in return. There is no reason why a person must slave away to see a little profit. That is why residual income seems to be so popular.

Making A Home Office Without A Home Office

28 April 2009

Many people like to work from home, and if you are interested in doing so you know that it is going to be very important that you find a place where you can spend your work day without feeling like you are still at home. There are lots of ways that you can have a home office. Some people are lucky enough to have an extra room that they can use for their home office, but most people do not have that luxury. If you don’t have a home office, you might be able to still feel like you do, and still get as much done as you would be able to get done in a home office.

The first thing that you are going to need is the space. You want to be sure that you have enough space for your home office, and it might be that you have to make space. However, depending on what you want to be doing in your home office, you might not need that much room. If you are able to, you can even set up a desk or a tray table in a corner of the rec room or the living room, and work from there. Think about basements too, you might be able to work in your basement and it might end up being exactly what you are looking for.

Remember that an office space doesn’t have to be huge, and it doesn’t have to be the only place in your house that isn’t used for anything else. There just has to be some way that you can distinguish when you are at your office from any other time. For instance, some people use a roll top desk in their dining room. When the desk is open and the computer is on, this means that it is work time. When they are done with work they can turn off the computer and close the desk, which means that the work day is over and they can stop worrying about it. This is something that many people use if they are doing their work in a room that is used for anything else. Remember that this is all something that you can do without making a big deal of it, or without worrying that you will be unable to do your work.

There are other things that you can do. Consider buying a room divider, which will turn any room in your house into two rooms. You can use one for your office and you will not have to worry about not having the space. You can also be able to do this so you don’t have to worry about your home office being as neat as any other room in your house.

The only requirement is that you some how find a way to separate your home office from the other rooms in your house. This is something that you have to be sure that you do so that you can work successfully.

Making Decision To Start Full Or Part Time

26 April 2009

Whenever a person is looking at starting their own business, money and time are two areas that can make the decision a tough choice. On the one hand, leaving the current job is more than a leap of faith in their own abilities and the viability of their business plan it is also a high gamble on the finances of their family. Unless there is already a waiting list for their product or services, it can take some time before the income from the new venture is enough to meet all of their business and personal expenses.

Most people who start a new business pour the majority of their money back into the business and usually only pay themselves as much as they need to get by. Unfortunately, for many new businesses there may not be enough initial income to meet all of their personal obligations as well as business expenses. Even if the business is located inside the home, there will still be money needed for many areas of its operation.

It really comes down to a simple question of whether to hang onto their old job and start the new on a part-time basis or, if they have sufficient savings to make the full-time plunge. Understanding that if they decide to pursuer the avenue of a full-time business, their savings is not going to last forever and at some point they may have to find another job to support their family if the business does not begin to progress as planned.

Depending on the type of business being started, it may not be possible to begin part-time, and some service industry businesses will need to be available on a regular schedule. However, that does not mean it cannot be started part-time, with the new owner making contacts to look for their first customer. A common mistake among new business owners is having no idea where their first customer will come from and once they do have their first client, how to translate that into referrals for more work.

One advantage some new service industry businesses may have is being able to offer the services during hours traditionally not met by existing businesses. Companies that work during the day may charge a premium for their services if they have to be performed after traditional hours. A person working in the industry full-time may be able to add customers who also work during the day and need the services performed in the evening. This can be an availability niche to help get a new business off the ground.

Starting the business on a part-time schedule is going to be a two-edged sword in that the owner will be putting in extra hours working in the odd hours. However, if they dedicate the income to the business and continue meeting personal expenses from their day job, they will be able to eventually make the switch to working in their business on a full-time basis, allowing it to grow to meet their financial needs.

Learning The Secret To Internet Success

24 April 2009

How many times have you seen the sales pitch that someone has unlocked the secret to internet success? Probably more than once. Now for a fee, they want to share the secret with you. Why? To get your money, of course and in order to get your money back, you can share the same secret with others. Consider how many people now have that secret and you can begin to wonder how many people are left in the dark.

In reality, there is no secret to achieving internet success. It takes hard work and a complete understanding of how making money on the internet works. It begins by having a product or service that people want or need and ware willing to pay for it and continues with how you get the word out that you have it for sale. Prior to the explosion of internet use, it was called advertising and for all intents and purposes, the same methods used then are used today to make sales.

The internet however has made it possible for people to sell things without actually delivering what you have paid for and too many people fall into the trap. No person of reasonable intelligence will send someone money expecting nothing in return, but there are some folks who will send out money hoping they get something back. When it does not happen, they chalk it up to experience and look for something else. If you are that type of person, there are a lot of people in the world who would be willing to sell you a bridge or two. Don’t worry. You can get your money back be reselling the bridge to someone else.

If that sounds far fetched, consider some of the offers you have received in your in box. You can spend a lot of time reading the email and then click on to their website and read some more, never really knowing exactly what you will receive when you send in your money. After you pay the fee, you may receive an instant download explaining how you too, can convince others to send you money. You then send out the same email selling others the exact same information.

Very similar to sending a self-address stamped envelope and a couple of dollars to learn how to make money stuffing envelopes. You receive instructions on how to place the same advertisement inviting others to send you a couple of buck in a self-addressed stamped envelope so you can send them the same information. And the offers continue to be advertised, but few complain because after all it was only a couple of bucks.

The real secret to making money on the internet is there is no secret. It is done the same way as it has been done for centuries. Delivering on promises of goods or services and treating your customers with the respect they deserve will provide an income whether online or off line. Goods and services sell far better than promises.

Making The Most Out Of Your Work At Home Day

23 April 2009

Many people find that working from home is something that they can do in order to make themselves even more successful. However, if you are working from home you probably know that it is easy to slack off or to sleep in, and it might be easy to not get as much done as you should, simply because you have the freedom to work whenever you want to work. While some find that working at home makes them more productive, some find that the opposite is true and that without the schedule that forces them to be at work, they are unable to get things done easily. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that you are able to be productive and still be able to have the freedom of working from home.

First of all, you should set a work schedule. Because you working from home, this can be any type of schedule that you need. You can work mornings or afternoons or even nights. However, you should be sure that you set a schedule and keep to it. This will mean that your clients will know when to reach you, your family will know when you are working and when you are not, and you will be able to fit everything into your schedule .The best part about working from home is that you are going to be able to decide when you want to work and when you do not want to work. Therefore, be sure that you set the schedule for times that you do want to work.

Next, even though you are working from home you should be going somewhere while you are work. Don’t set up your laptop in front of your TV and think that you will get anything done while you are working from home. Set up a desk or even a tray table somewhere that can be your home office. Remember that you don’t’ always need an actual office for your home office – you can simply use an area that is only for your work. If you have a place to go that is the place you only go when you are working, you’ll find that you are able to get much more done.

If you are able to have set work hours and to actually go somewhere else for your work, you will find that you are much more productive. There are other things that you can do as well. Get dressed for work, even if you aren’t going to work. Spend some time making sure that you feel like you are getting ready for work, so that while you are working you will feel as if you are doing more than just hanging out at home. If you are trying to run a household or take care of children as well, be sure that you schedule things in such a way so that your work time does not overlap with this time, either. You will be much more productive.

Make Decisions Based On Facts Not Emotions

22 April 2009

Running a business can be fun, but many successful business owners have come to a tough realization that in a business environment, they have no friends. They have employees that are dedicated to the company and they may have customers that are loyal, but the bottom line of the business is the prime concern they have to watch. One of the biggest obstacles they face in the say to day business operations is their own emotions and they need to leave them at home when they head for the office.

For instance, a business owner is approached by their financial expert who tells them they have to cut half of their workers loose in order to meet expenses. This can be an emotional time for the owner as on one hand, many of the workers are loyal to the company and are very productive. On the other hand the company needs to be able to run leaner to make ends meet.

Simply based on the emotions of keeping the business operating, the solution may seem obvious in cutting half the workforce. However, before making that call the owner needs to look at all the facts and not just the financial ones. Questions need to be asked such as how long will this lack of income last? If we layoff employees, how much will be spent on unemployment compensation? What are other options in cutting expenses, such as is the finance guy really necessary?

If half of the workforce is let go, what will be the effect on productivity and customer service and will the remaining employees be able to handle everything without the additional help? After thoroughly understanding all of the available options and the effects of instituting any suggested changes it is found that half will need to be let go, then that is the right decision for everyone.

Decisions have to be based on how the outcome will affect everyone involved and not just the ones being laid off. Sure, it is a tough decision but one of the responsibilities of a business owner is being able to make the tough calls, knowing it is the right one for the business as well as for the remaining workers. Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule about which employees will need to go away. Seniority may be the deciding factor, but some businesses use productivity instead.

For example, a new hire may produce as much or more as an employee with several years experience, the new hire may be a better fit. Owners should never look at payroll as a deciding factor as getting rid of some of the higher paid, long-term employees is also getting rid of loyalty as well as experience.

The decision should be based on who can offer the most to the business, a decision based on facts rather than the emotions of who needs the job more. From a cold fact point of view, if the worker needs the job that bad, they have probably been a consistently hard, productive asset to the company.

Make Financial Goals Part Of Your Business Vision

19 April 2009

Failure to accurately see the financial future of your business is one sure way to make sure it cannot succeed. Before you even begin to write your business plan, regardless of the type of business, you will need to have an accurate vision of what your personal financial needs will be once you start your own venture. You cannot base you needs on your current earnings, as there are other factors to calculate into the total such as health insurance, business licenses and other business-related costs.

While some of the costs will be one-time fees or will represent annual costs, other will be monthly and some cases weekly. The first step is to determine what you and your family needs to meet your obligations including rent or mortgage payments, utilities, food and typical household expenses. If your spouse is the one handling the family’s financial affairs you will need their input in determining your minimal monetary needs.

Once you have that in writing, you can begin estimating business costs. Even though you are setting up an office in the home and plan to take a business use of the home tax deduction, you should still consider the portion of the rent and utilities that will be represented by your tax deduction as a business expense. For example, if your month;y mortgage payment is $1,000 and you can allow 10 percent of house expense as a deduction, then plan on $100 being spent on your place of business.

The same should be planned for utilities and other costs, including a telephone line. Even though you probably have a home phone, a separate line for the business is a good idea to prevent interruptions at home after hours as well as to keep children from answering the phone when a potential client calls. It just sends a more professional message when the business phone is answered in a business manner.

Conservative estimates can be a good starting point, but you will also need a contingency fund in the event of an unforeseen repair or a project that gets out of hand and costs more than anticipated. Once you have gong through the home and business expenses you will have a good idea of how much money you have to bring in through the business to maintain your family lifestyle and meet your business expenses.

Now it is time to seriously think about the projected income of the business. Remember it is not only the business expenses you need to cover. For example, if you anticipate personal expenses of $1,500 a month and business expenses of $500 a month, anything less that $2,000 a month is going to leave you with some unpaid bills. If the business you are planning to open is not capable of delivering that amount of income, you may have to rethink your prospects.

Even if the potential is there for a minimum of $2,000 per month, you will need to be realistic about how long the business will need to be operating before that level is achieved and determine if you have enough money to survive until it does grow to the necessary level.

Make Money Online Selling Other People’s Stuff

12 April 2009

Would it no be great if you could sell merchandise online without having to buy it and warehouse it? Someone else handles all incoming orders and shipping and customer service and all you have to do is advertise you website and collect your money. If you already have a website that receives a fair amount of traffic this can become a reality through the use of affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to pick up some extra cash off your website. A majority of internet businesses either sponsor their own affiliate marketing program or use a separate company to host their affiliate program for them, Website owners can register to become an affiliate and while some companies will want to take a look at your site before approving your participation, others will automatically accept you as an affiliate partner.

Once accepted, you will receive a code that identifies your website and tracks any visitors from your site that goes to the company’s site and places an order. In return for you placing the company’s ad on your site, you receive a commission on any sales generated from your site. Typically, the ads you post are available as plaint text ads or graphics and are generated by the company or their affiliate marketing hosting service, containing the tracking code. As long as the code is entered as given to you, the company knows who to credit for the sale.

You can sign up with companies that compliment the topic of your webpage as well as any other topic you might choose. It is not advisable, if you sell products or services on your site to host affiliate ads for companies in which you are in competition. It is also recommended that you change out the ads frequently as many companies offer different products or services during different times of the year or for holidays. By keeping your advertisements fresh and in season, you have a better chance of making additional sales for the company and earning more money.

One minor point with affiliate marketing is you can alter the links to the affiliated site to have it open in a new browser window. Most links are written and coded to take the visitor to the company’s website and if they close that browser page, they will go back to their default home page. By adding the instruction to open the page in a new window, when they close the window to the company’s website, they are returned to your website where they can begin looking for another of your affiliates with which to do business.

One word of caution is to choose your affiliates carefully. If you have family-oriented website, you will want to make sure none of the ads you place on your site will direct visitors to sites designed for mature audiences only. Additionally, you should frequently verify that the links you have on the site actually go to the site with which you have affiliated. Company names online can be sold and the new company may keep the affiliate program operating as it was establish, except the merchandise being sold may not meet the family-only criteria.
